Researchers writing about what's been called the "guilt gap" describe women feeling pressure to justify pleasure, a treat, a nap, a purchase, an afternoon doing absolutely nothing useful, in a way men rarely have to.

The writer and poet Audre Lorde argued something radical decades ago: that joy and pleasure aren't indulgent extras, they're a genuine source of internal power, something worth claiming fully, not apologizing for. That idea still feels radical today precisely because so many women were quietly taught the opposite, that joy has to be earned, justified, or shared before it's allowed to simply belong to her.
