Have you ever noticed that household appliances wait until you're comfortable before staging a rebellion? Mine certainly did.

The Day My Washing Machine Promoted Me to Plumber (Without the Pay Raise)

My automatic washing machine broke down, and overnight I was promoted to Chief Household Handyman and Plumber, a position I never applied for and certainly wasn't qualified to fill.

Now, let's be honest. I am no longer a teenybopper. I recently earned membership in what society politely calls the "elderly community." In other words, my body now negotiates with me before every heavy lift.

Yet there I was… picture it, get creative! Changing washers. Wrapping seal tape around pipe fittings. Cleaning rusty water pipes. Removing and washing the filter. Checking, then rechecking, that the outlet pipe hadn't developed a mind of its own.

Then came the indoor swimming pool.

Water leaked across the floor, threatening my wooden panels. Towels appeared from nowhere. Buckets multiplied. The washing machine had to be wrestled from its cosy corner while still full of water and a week's worth of laundry. Have you ever tried moving a washing machine filled with water? It's like trying to persuade a stubborn hippopotamus to dance.

Every repair attempt ended the same way.

"Maybe it's fixed." Switch on. Wait… Drip. Drip. Drip.

Back to square one.

("Back to square one" means returning to the beginning after all your efforts have achieved absolutely nothing.)

The saga stretched over two weeks. Six loads of washing patiently waited their turn. Actually… "patiently" is probably the wrong word.

The washing basket was beginning to resemble a biological experiment, while a rather miff odour — a polite way of describing that unmistakable smell of damp clothes left waiting far too long — started making unwelcome appearances.

The Quotation Merry-Go-Round

Naturally, we called plumbers and appliance technicians. Every conversation began with the same reassuring confidence.

"Certainly! We can help. What's the make? The model? The size?"

Excellent. Hope returned.

Then came the next sentence.

"If you accept our quotation, the call-out fee is waived. If you decline the quotation, you'll be charged the call-out fee."

Fair enough. Then I phoned another company. The fee increased. The next company? Higher still. By the fourth phone call, I began wondering whether technicians travelled by limousine.

Now, don't misunderstand me. I genuinely appreciate that businesses face rising costs. Fuel is expensive. Parts cost more. Skilled people deserve fair wages. Inflation affects everyone.

The difficulty is that many households are also feeling the squeeze. When you're already budgeting every rand, an unexpected repair bill can feel less like maintenance and more like a financial ambush.

So, what did we do? We adapted. The washing machine took an extended holiday, while we returned to methods our grandparents would recognise.

Buckets. Soap. Hands. Feet. Everyone took turns. Only fair, isn't it?

An Unexpected Business Idea

Then today something unexpected happened. I bumped into an old friend I hadn't seen in years. We chatted briefly before she smiled and said, "I work from home now. Pop in sometime and we'll catch up properly."

And just like that… my brain produced one of those glorious little bursts of inspiration. You know the kind. The frustrating clouds suddenly part, and an utterly ridiculous idea feels absolutely brilliant.

Why shouldn't I charge a call-out fee?

For one reasonable fee with travel expenses included. I will visit your home and provide:

  • A complete update on everything you've missed over the past few years

  • Unlimited storytelling

  • Practical advice gathered from decades of making mistakes so you don't have to

  • Shared laughter

  • Occasional tears

  • A healthy dose of perspective

  • Complimentary cups of tea while we solve absolutely none of the world's problems

No spare parts required. No seal tape needed. No plumbing licence necessary. Just two old friends reconnecting.

The Science Behind the Laugh

There's actually a fascinating reason this idea made me laugh so much.

When we're stressed, our brains become intensely focused on solving problems. It's exhausting. But the moment we reframe a difficult situation into something funny or creative, our brains reward us.

That little flash of inspiration releases dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with motivation, reward, and learning. Contrary to popular belief, dopamine isn't simply the "happy chemical." It's the brain's way of saying, "Now that's an interesting idea , pay attention!"

In my case, two miserable weeks of leaking pipes, soggy towels, endless phone calls, and hand-washing suddenly transformed into the idea of becoming a professional "catch-up consultant."

Will I ever invoice my friends? Probably not. Would anyone pay? That's highly questionable.

But for a few wonderful moments, my washing machine stopped being the villain of the story and became the unlikely author of a very good laugh.

Perhaps that's life's greatest repair job. Sometimes we don't fix the problem. Sometimes we simply change the story we tell ourselves about it.

And somehow… that makes the load, excuse the pun, a little lighter.

What does the idiom "back to square one" mean?

What does the idiom "back to square one" mean?

Answer: Returning to the beginning after all your efforts have achieved absolutely nothing , exactly what happened after every failed repair attempt.
