Can't Stop Drinking Coffee? Fix Your English in 1 Cup. By Ordering It Out Loud

You're getting coffee anyway. You were always getting coffee anyway. So instead of pointing at the menu and grunting, say the whole order out loud in English, every single time. “Can I get a medium oat milk latte, please” takes ten seconds and turns a habit you already have into free speaking practice you didn't have to schedule.

A quick (true-ish) story. A student of mine used to point at the menu silently every morning, terrified of mispronouncing “cappuccino.” One day the barista was new and didn't understand pointing. Panic-forced into speaking, she blurted out a full sentence, got it slightly wrong, got her coffee anyway, and realized the sky did not fall. She's been ordering out loud ever since, and yes, her cappuccino pronunciation is fine now.

The science bit. This works through something psychologists call “low-stakes exposure therapy” for language anxiety. A coffee order is short, predictable, and the person listening genuinely does not care about your accent, they want your order. Repeating this exact low-pressure interaction daily quietly trains your brain that speaking English out loud isn't actually dangerous, which sounds obvious but takes real repetition to sink in.

Why this beats a formal speaking class. A class happens once a week, if you're lucky, and it feels like a test. Ordering coffee happens daily, feels like nothing, and still counts as real, live, unscripted speaking practice with a stranger. Repetition wins.

tip

Try this today: Next time you order any drink or food, say the entire order out loud in English, even if pointing would be easier. Ten seconds of mild discomfort, forever banked as speaking practice.

Quick Check: Tap to reveal the answer

True or False: Pointing at a menu is just as good for your English as speaking your order out loud.

Answer: False! Speaking your order out loud, even briefly, is real low-stakes speaking practice that trains your brain that speaking English isn't scary.
