I always thought it was a form of respect, when addressing another person, meaning, an apology for the intrusion, the same for when I needed to learn something. Today I know different.

She says sorry for asking a question, sorry for needing help, sorry for simply being in the room. Her empathy was never the problem. The apology just doesn't belong there.

Researchers Karina Schumann and Michael Ross found something fascinating: women don't actually apologize for a higher percentage of the offenses they commit than men do. What differs is perception, women are more likely to notice, and label, a situation as one that calls for an apology in the first place, often shaped by a lifetime of being taught to consider everyone else's comfort before their own.

Here's the beautiful part hiding inside that finding: that instinct comes from real empathy, a genuine gift for noticing how other people feel. That gift was never the problem. The problem is only when it gets pointed at moments that never needed an apology, her question, her presence, her simple right to take up exactly the space she's already earned.
