For two and a half years, they stood outside the White House and said nothing at all. Their silence was so powerful, guards were ordered to beat it into submission.

Starting in January 1917, a group of American women known as the Silent Sentinels stood outside the White House, holding banners, saying absolutely nothing. Led by Alice Paul and Lucy Burns, roughly 2,000 women took turns picketing in total silence for the right to vote. Their silence wasn't weakness. It was strategy. As one historian later explained, a protester who says nothing gives authorities no slogans to censor and no words to twist. The silence itself became impossible to argue with.

The response revealed exactly how much that silence threatened the status quo. The women were arrested, imprisoned in brutal conditions, and on what became known as the "Night of Terror," guards were ordered to beat them into submission simply for standing there, quietly, holding a sign. The backlash was so disproportionate to a wordless protest that it turned public opinion, and helped move the country toward the 19th Amendment.

Here's what deserves remembering: a woman's silence has never automatically meant she has nothing to say. Sometimes it means she's already said everything, and is simply waiting for the world to catch up.
