Her Strength Was Never Supposed to Mean Invisible - Fact 15

THE WOMAN PROJECT — Woman Fact 15
Researchers have an actual name for it: the Superwoman Schema. Being everyone's strength, all the time, has a real, measurable cost.

There's a woman most of us know, maybe we are her, who never seems to break. She holds everyone together, never asks for help, never lets anyone see her struggle. Researcher Dr. Cheryl Woods-Giscombé studied this exact pattern and named it the Superwoman Schema: an obligation to appear strong, suppress emotion, resist vulnerability, and help everyone else, often at real cost to herself.
The research is honest about both sides. That strength is a genuine source of pride and real resilience. But the studies also link constant emotional suppression to higher rates of depression, poorer sleep, and greater physical stress on the body. One study even found this pattern lowers the likelihood a woman will reach out for help when she genuinely needs it, because asking for help can feel like breaking a role she's held her entire life.
Here's the truth worth saying plainly: her strength was always real. But strength was never supposed to mean invisible. The strongest thing she can do sometimes is let someone else carry a little of the weight, and let herself be seen while she's carrying it.
SAY IT
Practice this phrase out loud today: "I'm strong, and I'm also allowed to need help."
THINK IT
When was the last time you let someone see you struggle, honestly, without immediately reassuring them you were fine? What stopped you the times you didn't?
CHALLENGE IT
Tell one person today, honestly, that something is actually hard right now. Not "I'm fine." The truth.
